Solution Focused Therapy

Solution Focused Therapy
Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), also known as Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), is a goal-oriented, future-focused therapeutic approach that emphasizes finding solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Developed in the 1980s by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, SFT is based on the belief that clients have the inner resources and strengths needed to create positive change in their lives. Instead of analyzing the origins of an issue, therapists using this method help clients identify what is already working and explore how to build on those successes.
A key feature of SFT is its emphasis on setting clear, achievable goals. Therapists often ask questions like, “What would be different if this problem were solved?” or use the “miracle question” to help clients envision a preferred future. By focusing on what clients want to achieve rather than what they want to avoid, SFT helps shift attention from obstacles to possibilities. This can be empowering, especially for individuals who feel stuck or overwhelmed by their challenges.
SFT is typically short-term and highly collaborative, with clients taking an active role in shaping the direction of the therapy. It’s widely used in a variety of settings, including mental health, education, coaching, and social work. Its strengths-based approach makes it especially effective for those who prefer a practical, optimistic, and empowering path to personal growth and problem-solving.
