Can Cacao Support Mental Health and Wellbeing | Benefits of Cacao Ceremonies

Do I think chocolate can cure mental health conditions? Absolutely not.
But I do believe cacao, and cacao or tea ceremonies, can support mental health and wellbeing. Here is why.

I spent many years working in acute psychiatry with patients experiencing depression, anxiety, psychosis, PTSD, bipolar disorder, BPSD and everything in between. Medication sat at the centre of treatment, and I even trained to prescribe it. While it still plays an important role, especially in the short term, I eventually wanted to explore more natural and complementary ways to support both my patients’ wellbeing and my own.

This curiosity led me to cacao ceremonies. I actually experienced my first one in the UK, even though the practice originates elsewhere.

What Are Cacao Ceremonies?

People in South America and many other parts of the world have practised cacao ceremonies for centuries. They viewed cacao as the food of the gods and used it to connect with spirit or a higher power. They also used it as medicine, which is why many people see it as a natural remedy, although more supportive and preventative than curative.

Cacao comes from the seed of a plant that grows in tropical regions of the Americas. Farmers harvest, ferment and dry the seeds, but they do not roast them. This minimal processing keeps antioxidants, flavonoids and minerals such as magnesium intact. Raw cacao tastes deeper and more bitter than processed cocoa, but it offers far more health benefits.

Cocoa goes through heavy processing and loses most of its natural nutrients,
so it cannot offer the same wellbeing support, although you can still enjoy it as part of your diet.

Why Cacao Can Support Mental Health and Wellbeing

Understanding the physical benefits of cacao helps explain its role in mental health. This is the area I work with in clinic and where I also host cacao and tea ceremonies.

A cacao ceremony begins with preparing a warm drink using natural or lightly processed ingredients such as plant based milks, agave and spices. This slow, mindful preparation encourages you to check in with your body, notice how you feel and choose ingredients with intention. Many spices also support wellbeing, which adds another layer to the experience.

People often describe cacao as heart opening. During ceremonies we set intentions, reflect on what the heart wants and meditate. We drink the cacao slowly and mindfully, using all of the senses. This level of awareness helps us recognise positive sensations, which can create calmness, emotional clarity and a deeper sense of connection.

Cacao contains theobromine and anandamide, two compounds that can support mood and emotional wellbeing. Combined with the mindful practice, cacao often feels grounding, soothing and gently uplifting.

Cacao as a Superfood

Cacao is increasingly recognised as a nutrient rich superfood. Its natural stimulant properties can support energy levels, but many people find it gentler and less jittery than caffeine. This makes it a supportive addition to daily routines for those looking for balance and focus.

Mindfulness Rituals Beyond Cacao

I recommend mindfulness practices to almost everyone, and they do not have to involve cacao. Tea, decaf coffee, herbal drinks or even juice can be used in similar ways.

A simple ritual might include:
• Preparing your drink slowly and with intention
• Focusing on each step rather than multitasking
• Noticing your breathing and how your body feels
• Reflecting on what you genuinely want in that moment
• Allowing yourself space to enjoy the drink fully
• Setting a gentle intention
• Experiencing the drink through all five senses such as touch, sight, smell, sound and taste

And most importantly, enjoy it.

Bringing These Practices Into Everyday Life

Small and intentional practices can make a meaningful difference to how you feel day to day. If you would like to explore how cacao or tea ceremonies may support your mental health, or if you want to introduce more mindful moments into your routine, you are welcome to book an appointment here.
